Poncirus trifoliata or Trifoliate Orange is a cold hardy citrus tree native to northern China and Korea. These cold hardy trees yield edible green citrus-like fruits closer to a lemon than an orange. Great for juicing, jams or jellies. They can also be planted close together to form a natural thorny barrier or fence.
A deciduous tree, Trifoliate Orange loses its foliage every winter during the cold season. The bark on the trunk and branches stay green which makes for a nice winter accent against a snowy white backdrop. Poncirus trifoliata is hardy to USDA Hardiness Zone 5 and does not seem to naturalize in warmer climates without a cold dormancy.
Poncirus trifoliata ‘Flying Dragon’ plants will also be available soon.
